Friday 2nd November

# reasons that i came up with to, to consider why boys generally find books in the fantasy and science fiction genres more appealling than others are because i believe that boys have more interests in adventure and there brains always wonder of and what to believe things that aren't true but can relate to in a way. Boys have more active minds and want to fulfill them with things that interest them like space ships, rockets or the fantasy and science fiction genres in novels. Boys like fantasy and science fiction more than genres such as romance, love and genres like that due to not finding them appealing and enjoyable and dont relate to them at a young age. I think that females may mature earlier than males.

Personally i dont enjoy science fiction and fantasy novels because they simply dont appeal to me and i struggle to read novels because i dont enjoy them and when i do read a novel i want it to be enjoyable such as a sports genre or something with fighting in it or teenagers life or something.

Ummm some of my mates enjoy these genres i dont know why but they do.

My Favourite genre is sport or something with fighting in it or teenager novel because i enjoy these types of movies and if they come out in a novel form i would be more than happy to read it. i can relate to these novels more than others and because i can relate to them i enjoy reading them and overall just enjoy reading.

26th October

I think that poetry has remained popular over centuries and many generations because it is an excellent and effective way to communicate with people. Poetry has also remained popular over the centuries because it can also be used for entertainment as wailliam shakespeare has done in his theatre productions.

One of the most popular forms of poetry today has gotta be rhyme or rythm because we see it in our everyday lives on the television or on banners and billboards.

Poetry doesnt really play a big role in our lives today because we can communicate without it and its not like we need poetry to communicate. However poetry can be used in our everyday lives sometimes to try and help to communicate or get our point with others in a different way. Or you can write some poetry to express your feelings with others but not by having to speak to them about it.

One bit that appeals to me most in poetry is the message that is under the words if you know what i mean like you can read a peice of poetry and at first it doesn't make sense but if you read it again nd break it down there could be a really nice message inside of it.

I enjoy both reading and writing rhyme and rythm poetry because it is the two that i feel comfortable with. I like it how in rhyme you can just flow through it easily and find new words and meanings for things and words that you may have never known could have rhymed together.

haha um the only 2 poems i know of the top of my head due to television is the paint supplies advertisement and the adelaide furniture and electrical one because it has both rhyme and rythm in it and gets stuck in ur head easily.

Friday 19th October

The quotation means that we don't write poetry for nothing we write it for a meaning and that poetry can express many things such as love and romance without it being written in a boring peice of prose writing. I think this because it is what the quoate is trying to say and what i personally think potry is.

I would have to agree with this statement poetry is god to read sometimes but not most of it because it only expresses feeling and passion mainly and is used to get points accross in a different way. However poetry can also be used for advertisements on the television or newspaper to try sell a product or promote a business such as the lube mobile advertisement. There are also many different types of poetry for different emotions that you want to get accross like rhyme and rythm can be put together to make a catchy television advertisment that gets stuck in your head.

My 2 examples of poetry are:

my first example of poetry is the carlton draught ad song "it's a big ad" because it uses many different types of poetry that is effective such as a bit of rhyme which makes the poetry so affective. this would have to be written as poetry and not prose because it would be boring and dull without it being a poem and wouldnt be as affective.

my second example is the lube mobile which i personally think is the best one due to me having it stuck in my head all the time. the lube mobile song is good because it uses a lot of repetition and rythm which makes it catchy and at the end you remember the little kid saying 13 30 32 which is there phone number. so if you ever got stuck some where and needed a mechanic you could remember the catchy bit at the end 13 30 32 :) this is one that would have to definately be poetry to work because it sets the emotion and it uses repetition to get the phone number stuck in your head without this being a peice of poetry you would probably hear the number but it wouldnt stick.

Friday 31 August

I dont believe that recreational drugs are really that bad. Recreational drugs such as alcohol and tobacco i dont think do much to the players if its a one of occasion and if they choose to do it. However if they continually keep taking them i think that there could be a problem there as these drugs ruin livers and lungs and make the sportman become unfit and healthy. I dont believe that players should be tested for taking recreational drugs because it is there own fault for taking them and they should be aware of the consiquences such as being bannned from playing there sport for a couple of weeks or untill they stop. If the sportsperson is taking sports enhancing drugs i think that it is a very big problem and that the person should be banned from playing the sport. Because it is not fair to all the other players if one person takes performance enhancing drugs and always wins due to it.

Book Vs Movie

Mmmmm. This is a hard one personally i think that movies are better than books and are more effective because with movies you can relax listen take notes whereas with books you have to read and look at words which i dont enjoy doing very much. Movies are better because they get straight to the point quickly without the uneeded extra detail. You also get through movies much quicker than through a book well atleast i think so. This is true for me because i am a slow reader and get bored easily thats why i prefer movies.

However books may be better for research and information as they go into much more detail which could be very useful in many instanses. I find books extremely helpful in research assignment where the detail is needed and i think that anything in written form is better for school purposes than movie.

The 40 Hour Famine

hey guys
i have been looking into doing the 40 hour famine lately and i think that it is all thumbs up. The 40 hour famine is your chance to give something back to kids in need in laos and east timor. You can go without many different things to try raise some money for these kids you could go without food(most common one), furniture, technology or pretty much anything else thaat comes to mind. for every $40 u raise helps feeds and cares for eight kids for one month. i believe that the fourty hour famine is for a great cause and that everyone should take part with it and help out. it officially runs from 8pm on friday 17 to noon on sunday 19 august. the fourty hour famine is set up by world vision which sets up many fundraisers to help out people in need below the poverty line. You can sign up over the world vision website but for many of u, u can sign up through our school.

Holes, by Louise Sachar

Holes, by louise sachar is a book that i beleive should be published because it is one of those books that once you start reading it you cant get your nose out of. This medium sized novel is about a boy named Stanley Yelnats (Stanley spelt backwards) who has bad luck thanks to a curse placed on his great- great-grandfather is sent to a juvenile detention camp for a crime he did not do. Stanley and the other boys at the camp are forced to dig large holes in the dirt every day. Stanley eventually realizes that they are digging these holes because the warden is searching for something. As Stanley continues to dig holes and meet the other boys at the camp. Throughout the novel you find out hints that help you find out what the warden is searching for.

I would say that this novel would be suitable for young adults/teenagers around the age of 10-20. because the language in it is not to difficult to read and it is a medium sized book. This novel will make young readers want to read the sequal to this noval. Which is also a great enjoyable medium sized novel.

This novel is one of the best and most exciting novels that i have ever read. Once i picked it up and read the first page i was stuck in it untill i finished it and that is what a great book should do it should make the reader want to read more and more of it. Sachar has written many other books but one of his most popular is 'There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom'. Im 100% sure that if this book is published it will win many awards such as the national book award, and the newbery medal award, these are just some that this book might win. Sachars books including holes almost always include children that don't fit in or who have low self-esteem. the main character (stanley yelnats) in holes gains self-confidence by the end of the book and makes some friends in the process. I would publish this book right away if i was a publisher i give it 10 out of 10.

Cheers =]

Peak Adventure

For peak adventure next week i am doing surfing. i chose to do it because in year 8 we had a small lesson at our camp and i want to try surfing for a whole week to challenge my self and improve at it. Probably turning on the surf board and learning how to catch rips out to catch waves back in. The most challenging thing on the trip will be preparing food and knowing what is good to eat and keeping our energy levels up. The best part about peak adventure will be learning how to surf properly and acheiving catching rips out to the back of the waves. I think it is important to challenge yourself and work beyond your comfort zone because once you have done something and look back at it you would be like wow i actually did that and you might not have the opportunity to do some of these activities again with your mates. i think that it is important to challenge yourself and work beyond your comfort zone so you can acheive something that you may have thought you would never have done in your life and once you have done it you may like it and want to do it in their spare time as a hobby.

Friday 15th June - Shakespeare

Shakespeare

Q: Have you read any poetry of Shakespeare's?

A: No, I havn't read any of shakespeare's poetry. However i may have read some without noticing that it was by Shakespeare.

Q: Have you seen any Shakespearean plays?

A: No, i havn't seen any of shakespeares plays but i have seen a modern version of one.

Q: Have you read any play of Shakespeare's?

A: No, i haven't but last year i think we had to do one but i was away.

Q: Have you seen any modern versions of Shakespeare's work, such as the movie 'Ten things I hate about you'?

A: Yes, i have seen 'Ten Things I Hate About You' last year and some times before that. I think that it is a good modern day version movie. i have also seen the modern version of romeo and juliet which is a good movie too.

Q: What do you know about Shakespeare's work?

A: Umm, not really a lot

Q: Mr S is putting on Macbeth next term. Would you be interested in being a part of this play?

A: Not really im not into plays and theatre or anything like that. the only thing that i might do in it is backstage haha.

Research Question

Why is it bad luck to mention the play Macbeth?

Supposedly, saying the name "Macbeth" inside a theater will bring bad luck to the play and anyone acting in it. The only exception is when the word is spoken as a line in the play. In order to reverse the bad luck, the person who said the word must exit the theater, spin around three times saying a profanity, and then ask for permission to return inside.

Books & Boys

The Dangerous Book for Boys

Q: Why do you think the author has started this blog?

A: I think that the author has started this blog to try and encourage boys to read books and enjoy them.

Q: There is a slogan at the top of the blog that says "readers are the leaders others follow"; what do you think this means?

A: This is just telling a simple message that people who read, do have an advantage over those who don't. Their imagination is more active and creative.

Q: Who do you think would be interested in reading this blog?

A: I think anyone would be interested in reading this book but mainly teenage people. The title 'Dangerous Books for Boys' catches my attention while browsing through other blogs. It has a strong case about how books these days are written for girls which is a major topic of discussion for some people.

Q: Which entry did you read?

A: I read 'The Dangerous Book for Boys '

Q: What was it about?

A: This entry is putting forward the idea of how the books today are written to more intrest girl more than boy. he went to different schools asking all the kids who enjoys reading and the majority were (not suprisingly) Boys

Q: Was there a fact/opinion/piece of information that you found particularly interesting? Why?

A: I did find This blog interesting because I always thought that books were never very interesting untill i found one good book and it was more written for a male audience so i started to enjoy reading and then found a sports novel that got me into reading even more.

Q: Did you feel inclined to post a comment? Why?

A: Yes i felt i wanted to leave a commment because i have never heard anyone have that oppinion close to mine about reading so if i did leave a comment i would have told him how i felt about his blog and that article.

Choosing A Book

Hmmm.. the way i choose a book?

i choose books usually by recommendation from someone else or by browsing through the shelves at our library. I sometimes use the computers to search for a genre of book that i enjoy such as sport or thriller/ action. Then i would get the book and read the blurb to see if i will enjoy it i also look at the front cover sometimes. =]

Sometimes the length of the book turns me of it if its like 800 pages long the techniques that i use are good and work about 99% of the time. I find that my way is quick and easy and very effective.

I chose the book that i am reading at the moment by coincidence i was just looking through the shelves and it was lying there on the shelf no in order of the shelf. i picked it up and read the blurb and thought that it would be a good book. The front cover also cought my eye with a young teenager around 15 standing on the front of the novel with a bodyboard in his arms.

Thats the way i choose books might not be the best way but it works for me.

Surfing Goliath

I have recently started reading a novel called surfing goliath. It is about a group of friends who enjoy body boarding and aim to surf a big wave that comes every three year called goliath hence the name surfing goliath.

Ben Player, 2005 World Bodyboarding Champion states that surfing goliath is a true representation of what it is like to be a bodyboarder... the comeraderie, sense of being at one with nature, realising one's goals despite the obstacles.

Seal and his mates live in the remote coastal town of browns beach. Seal lives for the thrill of bodyboarding. seal's mate angelo lives for fishingespecially the danger of shark fishing. At the moment in the novel the group has been getting extra training sessions in to practice for the big waves that are only a couple of weeks away they go to the beach every day after school to get some extra practice.

I am enjoying this novel a lot because it is about sport and i enjoy sports novels a lot i can't get my head out of this noval at the moment its only a fairly short novel but it is an enjoyable one.

cheers. =]

DIARY VS BLOG

People would rather do a blogger than a diary because with a blog you can get peoples personal oppinions on your work, and they can support you to keep on wrighting if you have written a good starting to a story.

However diary is really a recollection of your day that you write, you usually write an entry every day or week. A blog is more like a recolection on a piece of work that you have written, or the actual piece of wrighting, this is viewed by many people for encouragement or help like were to go next.

Short Story #1

DOING THE DOUBLE by Alan Durant

This book is about twins, and the sons of a fallen football legend, Nicky Green. They've always laughed about doing the double (swapping identities for the day) but it has always been a joke before...

In this story they actually do it and they are serious about it. Dale wants joe to take his place on the football(soccer) pitch and do the double for real due to his brother being injured and not being to play the next match.

This is a good book for people who enjoy a short action packed sports novel especially if they like soccer. this is a great short story for people of all ages.

Myself As A Reader

Hey, my name is stefdog #19.

I am a steady medium paced reader who enjoys reading sports novels. I find it hard to concentrate on reading for long periods of time outside of the class due to being distracted easily and going of to do other more enjoyable things. My favourite time of day to read for homework is before I go to bed.
When I find a decent novel about sports I find it easy to read probably due to it being enjoyable and I get stuck into the book and can't get my head out of it.
